The Serotonin-Plus Weight Loss Blog: A Gathering of Specialists

Last night I had dinner with the Medical Director of Tethys Labs, which is doing the study with us quantifying the diabetes risk reduction that the SP Program produces.  The preliminary data is outstanding and we look forward to gathering all the data and getting this published.  If I cannot get an article in the National Enquirer, I will strive for the New England Journal of Medicine.  Tomorrow I am attending a diabetes prevention summit being held at George Washington University.  There are many experts from around the country speaking.  There is also a United States Senator speaking and apparently there is a Senate Caucus concerning diabetes in America.  The predictions and trends are ominous.  1 out of 4 children will develop diabetes if these trends continue.  If we think we have a healthcare spending crisis now, when the boomers age even further and suffer the co-morbidities of weight , diabetes etc, this country will literally become bankrupt or rationing of care will occur.  Concerning prevention of diabetes, by far and away the most significant intervention is losing weight.  I am interested to see tomorrow how much the focus of these lectures are about weight loss.  I suppose we will hear lots about “promising need drugs” for treating diabetes or perhaps some new “miracle” weight loss pill, but as all of us know writing and reading this blog (no, I do not have a team of writers), there is no simple way around it:  Losing weight requires lots of work.  You all know this.  ”Eating less and exercising more”   “Eat less carbs”   “Avoid alcohol”….All of these sound so simplistic in their words, but enacting these are very difficult in the long term.  Let’s all work together to show the world just how much people can truly change their lifestyles and behavior-modify.

when we discuss children and their obesity I personally think that it’s the lacjk of exercise. Children are not sent out to play ball but rather sent to the comoputer or TV. Dodgeball. kickball etc. are too dangerous and PE is a social time with no activity.
