The Serotonin-Plus Weight Loss Blog: “Outside My Comfort Zone”

Over the past 6 weeks, I have been cajoling a number of our patients to agree to be “models” in our upcoming, May 19 NY Fashion Show. The usual initial response is ” I am not a model and I have never modeled..this is outside of my comfort zone.” I most definitely respect and understand that initial push-back, but I then explain that everyone who will “model” is in the same exact situation…clearly, not inside their comfort zone. The reason why Posner is pushing: I think it is incredibly motivational/inspirational for others to see how weight loss success can bring someone to the point of doing something they never would have thought about doing before: getting up in front of others and being proud of their “look”. This may compel others to want even more to put resolve into handling their own weight control issues. When a person is overweight, being seen at the pool in a bathing suit, attending a class reunion and similar events are avoided because of embarrassment. To an extent, all of these fun and social functions are “not in the comfort zone” of the overweight person. Losing weight, in fact, can place you right back into that comfort zone that allows for many more fun times.
