The Serotonin-Plus Weight Loss Program: Reality

When we enter a new patient into the SP Program, one of the first things we do is a body scan and we need to enter an accurate height to get an accurate BMI, body fat% etc. When I ask a person what their height is and then we go to the measuring pole, it almost NEVER happens that the person underestimates their height. The usual lament is “I must have shrunk”. Similarly, when I do a consult, ask the person what the current weight is, and then we get the person on the scale, almost always the scale shows a number that is higher than the person’s estimate. The point here is the human mind often plays games with us. It tells us that we are younger, taller, in better shape etc than we really are. Reality is the scale. This does not play games. This is why I BEG my patients to write their weight down once a week as this provides a true reality check. If we do not get on the scale and write it down, the mind will tell us “don’t worry, everything is okay.” Face the music, get on that scale and then have a plan to deal with the real number you see.
