Are You a Stand Up?


When I hear the term “Stand Up” I immediately think about comedians that perform live at a comedy club or other entertainment venue. However, today I want to discuss the issue as to whether the “stand up” desk at work is healthier for people than sitting down at the work place desk. And, if you read this entire entry, you will get Dr. Bob Posner’s Stand Up Routine!!!

There have been a number of conflicting studies favoring one side of the argument or other concerning the health benefits of standing at work as opposed to sitting. Some of these studies conclude that standing increases calories spent leading to enhanced weight loss while other studies show that the heightened amount of calories burned are negligible and have no impact on weight control.

There have even been studies that show an increase in heart attack rate in standers vs. sitters. From an orthopedic standpoint, people with lower back disc problems may benefit from standing as opposed to sitting. Pressure on the lumbar discs is often dependent on position and sitting tends to increase the pressure exacerbating pain in those with degenerative or bulging discs.

The bottom line: The jury is still out concerning the health benefits of a “standing desk” and specifically focusing on weight control, there are many, many other interventions you can employ that will help you control weight. First and foremost is following the SP dietary plan of high protein/low carb.
