Can Yoga Help You Lose Weight?

This entry is gonna cost me.  The reason?  My wife swears by the many positive effects of yoga and she constantly attempts to get me to join her to try it out.  She goes 2-3 times a week and is adamant about the many positive impacts of yoga and health/wellness.   Personally, I am not very flexible and I would bet that if 30 people are in a class, I would rate 30 out of 30 in terms of how “good” I would be at yoga.  Hence, the reason why I continue to resist.

Okay, so let’s move to the topic at hand:  Does engaging in yoga help a person’s weight control efforts?  From a caloric burn-off standpoint, different forms of yoga classes will produce differing amounts of energy expenditure.  For example, gentle stretching type of yoga will result in less calories burned than a more aggressive, large muscle focused class conducted in a higher temperature environment (hot yoga).

The other issue is the mind-body connection.  When people feel stressed, the ingestion of high carb/high salt/high fat foods tends to be a behavioral pattern.  Eating these food sources (stress eating) is a form of immediate gratification to offset the negative impact of stress.  Yoga, by helping people reduce stress, may help weight control efforts by reducing/eliminating stress-induced eating/drinking of derailing sources.

So, I guess the answer is that yoga, may, in fact, help with a person’s weight control efforts.  For me?  Kind of old school:  I will continue to throw a pair of shorts, sneakers a tee shirt that promotes Serotonin-Plus and head to the tennis courts or gym.  No yoga pants in my immediate future!
