Do Probiotics Impact On Weight Control?

A very popular class of dietary supplements being used these days is probiotics.   The human gut contains trillions of bacteria, most of which reside in the large intestine.  There are thousands of different types of bacteria inhabiting the gut and the total bacteria cells exceed ten trillion.  These organisms play a role in digestive health as well as the immune system.   Although the microbiota is established in early life, it can shift throughout life with changes in age, diet, geographical location, intake of food supplements and drugs, and other environmental influences.

The positive impact on health by the use of probiotics is somewhat controversial.  By providing the “good” bacteria in foods such as yogurts or specifically designed probiotic supplements, supposedly digestive health improves as well as immune function.  However, the studies looking into these claims are often conflicting.

There have been some reports of probiotics positively impacting on weight control.  From all of the studies I have read, I cannot come to the conclusion that probiotics influences weight control to the point where I would recommend the usage of these as an adjunct to weight control efforts.

So, to summarize:  Will probiotics help you lose and then control weight?  My answer is that the use of these will not hurt, but your money is much better spent on high protein/low carb foods that will for sure impact positively on your weight control efforts.
