Does Weight Control Affect Attention?

I have noticed that when I walk into a restaurant or store, if I am wearing a suit and tie I seem to get more attention from the people working there as opposed to wearing jeans, tennis shoes and a baseball hat. Perhaps being dressed up professionally carries a more “VIP” look and hence, the reason why more “positive” attention is paid to me.

For women, I doubt that anyone disputes that wearing a shorter dress, higher heels, more makeup etc. will bring more attention to you when you walk into a room as opposed to being “dressed down”.

Weight control will affect “attention” on both sides of the spectrum. When a person is morbidly obese, enters an airplane and starts walking down the aisle, lots of attention is being paid by people already seated, with the common thought: “I hope this person does not have the seat next to me.” Conversely, when a person in great shape/dressed sharply makes an entrance, many eyes are affixed to that person.

Not that positive/negative attention should be on the priority list for anyone’s weight control efforts, but reality is such that whether we like it or not, people pay attention to us based on our physical appearances. We all know this. Confidence and self-esteem are important components for all of us being happy and your successful weight control efforts will enhance both.
