Energy Drinks Boost do they help Weight Loss Efforts ?

A trip down the supermarket beverage aisle or checking out at the counter of a 7/11 store will bring your attention to what appears to be one of the fastest growing categories of drinks: “Energy” boosters. This has now become a greater than $20 billion a year U.S. consumer market. What used to be seen as only Red Bull has become a plethora of options with the most common still being Red Bull, Monster, and probably the fastest growing brand, 5 Hour Energy.

What are “Energy Drinks” and what role do they play, if any, in helping or hindering long-term weight control efforts? First and foremost, the most important component for the energy in Energy Drinks is the caffeine content. In addition to the caffeine, energy drinks also contain various vitamins, sugars, carnitine, theanine and other supplements. The caffeine content of an 8-ounce Red Bull (83 mg) is pretty close to the caffeine intake of a cup of coffee (100 mg). The carbohydrate content is around 29 grams.

The more concentrated energy “shots” such as 5-Hour Energy, tend to provide the same amount of caffeine as the larger drinks but contain less calories.

Energy drinks are very popular on the college campuses, especially being used in combination with alcohol. High caffeine intake combined with alcohol allows the user to not feel as tired from the alcohol usage, allowing the person to “party” lots longer into the night (or wee hours of the morning…anyone out there remember how we used to do that too, minus the Energy Drinks?)

Concerning your weight control efforts, I do not see these drinks being helpful in the least, and some studies have actually shown that they can lead to weight gain.

There is no better “boost” to your energy than losing that weight. If you need caffeine get that from coffee and tea; there is no need for the carbs and other components of those Energy Drinks.
