Weight Control: Can you “Get Away With It” ?

Let’s turn the clock back to early college years. The parties started at 1030 PM, we could sleep until noon, we were not worried about retirement planning, there were no pill bottles in our cabinets and we felt invincible.

Focusing on our eating/drinking behaviors in our late teens/early 20’s there was LOTS of “getting away with it”. We could down pizzas late at night (after eating three meals that day), guzzle a 6-pack of beer and not even go near a gym, and guess what? For many, weight would simply not go up.

Okay, now bring those clocks forward to the present time. I believe that most of you in your late 30’s or older will commiserate with me: We CANNOT “get away with it” anymore. And what “it” is referring to of course is the weight being under control despite lots of derailing eating/drinking behaviors.

The big “X” factor is weight control is the metabolism rates. Gaining or losing of weight is not a simple equation of “calories in/calories out”. In our earlier years the higher metabolic rates allowed for “getting away with it”.

The reality is that those faster metabolic rates of our college years have been replaced with much slower ones. This especially is true for females. There is no more “getting away with it” when it comes to weight control. One added issue: If you have had a long history of poor weight control and do not have a co-morbidity as yet, such as diabetes, back pain and/or many others, there will also be a high chance that you will NOT “get away from it” as far as eventually suffering from some or many of these maladies.

Replace the mind-set of “getting away from it” to “getting way from the derailing foods and drinks that will lead to major problems.
