How Can You Avoid The Super Bowl Damage?

Okay, is everyone psyched for the BIG GAME on Sunday afternoon? Well, if you are anyone other than a New England Patriot’s or Los Angeles Ram’s fans, you probably feel the same way I so: SuperBORE. However, we will all still watch the game, right? Your motivation may be to hope to see Brady and his team that seems to make it to the big game every year lose or simply to watch the funny commercials and half-time show.

The venue for watching the game? Many people gather for Super Bowl parties, others host smaller gatherings and some stay at home alone to watch with the immediate family. Probably common to all gatherings, whether they be large or small is the tendency to indulge in many food/drink sources that derail weight control efforts. Super Bowl parties are not exactly the venue for serving simply protein and vegetables. Alcohol, crunchy snacks and “stadium-like” foods are usually the standard fare.

For those of you trying to achieve lower scale numbers, this one day of indulgence may derail your entire week of focused/disciplined work to have the weight go down. How can you avoid the “Super Bowl Damage”? First, if you are attending a party, bring with you as a gift to the hosts a well thought out covered dish(s) that contains a healthy food choice. Given the 70% overweight rate, I can guarantee that you are not the only person at the event that is weight-conscious. Cut your alcohol with lots of zero calorie mixers and do not succumb to the milkshake-like heavy sugar coladas and other alcohol drinks that are very “bad” for weight control. When it comes to that dessert table, if you cannot say “NO”, make a small “tasting plate” with a tablespoon of the various desserts that you feel you must have.

You CAN watch the SuperBowl game and separate the fun of being involved with the game/people at the gathering from the derailing food/drink sources that are an obligatory part of the scene. Try hard not to allow 4 hours to obliterate the many, many more hours you put in this week to becoming healthier and happier.

And for me? If I can find a VCR I will place the video I have of the 2012 SuperBowl when my Giants beat the Patriots for the second time in 4 years in the Big Game. And I will be eating SOUR GRAPES!
