How Compatible is Pho for Weight Control?

Here is an observation of mine: There are far less “Chinese Food” restaurants now than there were 10 years ago. I know for certain that in the Lorton/Springfield/Burke/Fairfax Station areas there at least 5 Chinese restaurants that shuttered their doors in the last year or so. Most often, a sign appears on the closed doors thanking their customers for 10-plus years and then making mention of a lease increase at their locations.

Here is another observation: There are far more “Thai” and “Pho” restaurants around town. It seems that almost every strip shopping center/mall offers up a new Thai or Pho restaurant. So, why is this phenomenon occurring? Well, clearly the demand for certain types of foods change among generations, and as the Baby Boomers are heading into the sunset of retirement (still lots of delis and Chinese food restaurants in Florida!), the Generation X, Y and Millenials are now the majority demographic dining outside the home.

So, let’s get to the meat (or vegetarian) heart of the matter: Is “Pho” a healthy choice during a long-term weight control journey? Pho is a combination of broth, noodles, rice and meat. This is a common Vietnamese dish. The nutritional content of Pho depends on the type you order, but common to all is a very high sodium content. Therefore, if you are prone to putting on “water weight” with salt ingestion, Pho will most certainly have you feeling bloated. The noodles and rice are obvious carb sources and the amount of protein in a typical Pho dish would probably be under 3 protein exchanges on our SP dietary plan.

So, getting to the recommendation of your Baby Boomer doctor: Phoget about it (or now, employing my New York accent: Fuggetaboutit)…take a pass from dining at a Pho restaurant.
