How Does Weight Impact On Brain Health?

There are many components of “health” that can be measured, such as your blood pressure, glucose levels, cholesterol, cancer screening etc.  However, assessing “brain health” is more difficult as this is much more subjective in nature.  As we all get older, we do notice some changes in our memory capabilities which often are attributed to the normal aging process.  However, pathological conditions such as Alzheimers Disease will be very apparent to the person experiencing the symptoms as well as the family members and friends that observe these changes.

How does weight control impact “brain health”?  Numerous studies have shown the association of obesity and an increased risk of cognitive problems.  One interested study out of Arizona analyzed over 20,000 people to see what may be the cause of this association.  In the study, there was a blood test measured that is associated with inflammatory conditions. 

The test, “C-reactive protein”, is not a specific marker of inflammation in the brain but is a general marker of inflammation in the body.

In the study, the people with the higher BMIs showed higher levels of C-reactive protein, and this predicted declines in the cognitive scores seen in that group of people.

There are many, many reasons for people to stay focused on their weight control efforts.  Keeping the brain healthy is one of those reasons.
