How Healthy Are Fruits?

We have heard for years from nutritional authorities in the government that we should eat a diet with high amounts of vegetables and fruits.  I would like to specifically focus on fruits:  How “healthy” are fruits in our quest to control weight?

Well, let’s first discuss the nutritional components of fruits.  Although they will vary in the amounts, most fruits will contain essential vitamins, fiber and carbohydrates.  The carbs are coming mostly from sugar.  As an example, here is the nutritional content of a medium size banana (about 106 calories):

Concerning the vitamin and fiber content, if a person, instead, popped a multivitamin pill containing 100% of the RDI (Recommended Daily Intake) of those vitamin ingredients and a Metamucil fiber pill, this would only be ingesting 10 calories.

By no means I am suggesting that you avoid any/all fruits.  Rather, I am recommending that if you would like to have your weight loss be more aggressive, you should focus on proteins and vegetables and minimize fruits in addition to cutting the carbs.
