Is There a Power To Grapefruit?

There was a very popular fad diet years ago called the “Grapefruit Diet”. 

This consisted of ingesting either a whole grapefruit or grapefruit juice before each meal and then following a high protein/low carb/restricted caloric intake approach.  Clearly, the dietary interventions other than the grapefruit ingestion would lead to weight loss, so what effects did the grapefruit actually have?

Studies have actually shown that eating GF (I keep misspelling grapefruit at 5 am, so allow me the “GF”) can positively impact on weight control.  

There are two factors involved here:  1- There is data to suggest that GF reduces appetite so less calories are ingested 2- GF has a positive impact on insulin levels, thereby causing less fat deposition.

I remember the very funny late comedian, George Carlin, doing a standup routine about GF.  He said something to the effect:  “Did you ever notice that when people drink GF juice they squish their faces up like ewwww?  Why do people drink it???”

Well, George, there is some basis to the fact that GF can help, to some extent with weight control.
