Serotonin-Plus Weight Control: Self-Esteem

There are many “measurable” things that can have an objective number placed to them. Examples of these will include a weight, a height, a fasting blood sugar, a blood pressure reading etc.

There are other things that are more subjective in nature, especially self- assessment categories. One of these is self-esteem. The spectrum of self-esteem can range from the lowest of lows to delusions of grandeur. Often, the level of self-esteem does not match outsiders’ perspectives. There are many people that carry with them a very low self-esteem, when in fact, others around them see this much differently. Conversely, there are lots of other people that have inflated views of themselves as compared to the general consensus of others.

Does weight control play a role in self-esteem? For the overwhelming majority of people, the answer is “Yes”. When we feel that we look younger, healthier, more vibrant and aesthetically more appealing, that tends to boost our self-esteem. We have not asked this previously, but I wonder how the “number” would change if we asked our patients , on a 1-10 scale, to rate his/her self-esteem and then ask the same question after a significant weight loss. My suspicion is that this number would change radically.

There are so many benefits of successful weight control. Elevating self-esteem is one of them.
