Should You Rethink “Winging It”?

One of the popular “bar foods” is chicken wings.  As a matter of fact one of the most popular national sports bars is “Buffalo Wild Wings”.  This is a great place to gather with friends and family to watch your favorite team when all they are showing in the D.C. area is the Redskins game.  Whether it be a sports bar or other eating establishment offering the usual “bar food” cuisine, chicken wings are a staple on the menu.

 

So, let’s pay a hypothetical visit to Buffalo Wild Wings and order a small, 10-piece appetizer.  First, in general composition, chicken wings are made up almost all of skin and fat, then they are deep fried and tossed in a sauce that is 50% butter.  That composition alone is enough to start clogging arteries pretty quickly when they are consumed frequently.

Now, specifically to our hypothetical 10-piece order:  Calorie count-1650 calories and each wing contains: 14 grams of fat, 5.4 grams of saturated fat (the bad type), 40 mg of cholesterol and 284 grams of salt.  Once again, that is in each wing, so that small, 10-piece order contains a multiplier of 10 of the numbers provided above.

I am certain that you are pretty much as shocked as I am concerning the actual nutritional content of this form of “chicken”.  Even if you are not on a weight control journey, chicken wings most certainly provide a very unhealthy choice as an appetizer or meal.

So, in answer to the question posed by the title: Should we ‘Wing It”?  The answer is a resounding “NO”!!!
