Weight Control and The “Give Up” Mentality Blog

Personally, I am a really inept “handyman”. Whether it be putting together a gas grill, fixing a leaking toilet, mounting a shelf, or other, I am really not the guy to do these types of things. I have many friends and patients that are incredibly skilled in these efforts. I will attempt to accomplish these types of tasks on my own, but after a certain amount of hours and failures on my part to achieve the desired outcome, my mindset becomes: “I QUIT!”. This is followed by picking up the phone and calling a handyman/plumber or some other specialist to do something in 10 minutes that I failed after trying for hours.

Turning our attention to the weight control arena, I believe there is a similar mindset that can develop when weight loss is either too slow or not occurring at all. Trying hard (most of the time), getting on the scale at the end of the week and being greeted with either no loss at all or only a minimal amount leads to frustration. If this happens several weeks in a row, that “Give Up” mentality becomes entrenched and then the old behavior patterns take over. And those behaviors are the ones that caused the weight issue in the first place.

How does one avoid the “Give Up” mentality? A crucial step here is looking at the big picture/long term journey and realizing that there may be times when the person may not be able to focus well on weight control efforts. Unlike those Marie Osmond commercials that tout the “10 pounds in 2 weeks”, try to understand that a slow, steady weight loss has a MUCH better chance of sustainability that the “quick” weight loss.
