What Happens After You Lose Weight?!

We are headed to the WJLA television studios in Roslyn next week to film a TV commercial for the SP Program that will start running on News Channel 8. Two patients of ours have kindly agreed to come down to the studios with us and provide their testimonials about our program. The producer of the commercial requested that the patients come to the studios armed with high resolution pictures of themselves “before” their significant weight loss.

If you have ever seen a TV commercial for a weight control product or service there always “before and after” pictures of the person(s) claiming just how effective that product/program is in successfully helping weight loss. These pictures are often quite compelling, especially when the weight loss has exceeded 30 pounds.

Well, not being one to go against marketing principles that work, we are kind of doing the same thing in our commercial…we will show two people with compelling “before and after” images…one in a picture (“before”) and then the person speaking (“after”). The intent of the TV commercial is to compel more new patients to enter the SP Program…the “business” side of medicine.

The “Doctor” part of me often shakes his head when I see these commercials because I know inherently as a medical practitioner that it matters little what the immediate “after” looks like. What is MUCH more important is what happens “after” after. What I mean by this is that the LONG-TERM ability to control weight is the much more important factor for health and happiness than a short term “wow” result. Losing the weight is the first step… the much more difficult part is keeping the weight off.
