What Happens When You Hit The Wall?

During a long-term weight control journey, pretty much everyone will encounter times when they get worn down and lose enthusiasm for their efforts. Let’s call this “Hitting The Wall”. Face it: there is nothing “fun” about the steps and efforts needed for controlling weight: Planning meals/snacks, finding time to exercise, counting portions, eliminating/reducing foods we like, cutting back/eliminating alcohol, getting bored of eating eggs in the morning…All of these and more will create situations where we Hit The Wall and feel like giving up.

The very first step is to accept the fact that we will, at times, Hit The Wall. This does not make us “weak”, a “failure” or in any other way separate ourselves from the vast majority of overweight/obese people that similarly experience Hitting The Wall.

After acceptance, the next step is to remind ourselves why losing/controlling the weight is so vitally important. Perhaps you are taking medications for co-morbidities and want to reduce/eliminate these meds. Maybe your energy levels are low and you cannot keep up with your children/grandchildren. Possibly you are looking in the mirror and see someone older than your age and not fitting into your beautiful clothes. There are reasons that are life-altering as to why you started your efforts in the first place. Bring those reasons to the forefront of your mind/thinking.

Another step: Look around you and think about the people in this world who want/need you to be healthy and around them. Spouses, children, grandchildren, employees, work colleagues, etc etc. Their lives would be much less happy if you were not there for them. This will serve as a motivation to get enthusiastic for your efforts after Hitting the Wall.

The “Wall” will be hit numerous times during your long-term weight control journey. Accept this and use my blog entry today to help navigating around the “Wall”.
