What is The Best Popcorn?

I would bet that pretty much everyone, at one time or another, has enjoyed eating popcorn. One step into the movie theater and inhaling that smell of recently popped-popcorn will almost in a trance-like fashion,, cause us to move towards the concessions to buy a big bucket of that great tasting stuff. Additionally, we no longer need to have the concession person quickly spray a small amount of warm butter on the popcorn, but now we can take our own large tub to the place where we can place as much butter on the popcorn as we would like. The result of the “movie popcorn” could be a complete derailing of your entire day’s efforts of weight control.

At home, what used to be a stove-top heating up of popcorn has now become a very easy microwave preparation. Place the bag into the microwave, hit the popcorn button and in about 2 minutes the popping sounds lessen to the point that it is ready. The taste is not as good as the movie popcorn but the extra butter and “movie theater” popcorns do taste pretty darn good. Once again, indulging in these home popcorns can be deleterious to your weight control efforts.

So, if we do need to succumb to our popcorn urges, what is the best popcorn to use? Well air-popped popcorn has no or lots less oil, so that is a good start. The stove top popcorns are much better than the microwavable popcorns. The ones that can be made in the microwave tend to have lots of salt, artificial flavorings and the portions sizes are often quite large. If oil is to be used, avoid corn, sunflower and soybean oils and instead, opt for virgin olive, walnut, canola or avocado oils. Avoid butter if possible or use it very sparingly. Also, watch out for added sweeteners and chemicals.

In summary, popcorn in general is not exactly your “friend” during ling-term weight control efforts, but it is a “must” on your list of snacks, try to follow my suggestions above. And, time your trips to go to see a movie after you have eaten lunch or dinner because if you head in there when hungry, it is very difficult to resist lining up and paying exorbitant fees for a huge tub of that great tasting popcorn.
